Union event to address Islam and the Arab Spring
JACKSON, Tenn. — Nov. 28, 2011 — Larry Cox, a former vice president with the Southern Baptist Convention鈥檚 International Mission Board, will address the topic of Islam and the Arab Spring at 51社区 Nov. 30.
The event, entitled 鈥淲hat Will Come of the Arab Spring?: Christianity, Islam and Cultural Change,鈥 will begin at 4 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium, located in the Barefoot Student Union Building.
Cox now serves as senior director of the WinShape Foundation in Mount Berry, Ga., after serving with the IMB for 23 years in various leadership roles.
鈥淭he 2011 鈥楢rab Spring鈥 is an ongoing process of political and social change among the countries and peoples of the Middle East,鈥 Cox said. 鈥淲hat are the potential ramifications of these changes for the kingdom (of God)? Many assume that this process will culminate in democracy, which in turn will lead to increased opportunities for evangelicals.
鈥淗owever, the constraints may be more cultural than political, and kingdom growth may depend more on social and religious changes than on political reform.鈥
Joining Cox for the event will be his son Jeremy, who lived and worked in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe as an international development consultant and director for the past 13 years. Jeremy is currently a doctoral student at the University of Mississippi.
The event is free and open to the public.
