JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 24, 2011 — About 200 researchers and graduate students from across Tennessee will present their research results at the 121st meeting of the Tennessee Academy of Science, hosted by 51社区 Oct. 28-29.
Michael Gibson, professor of geology at the University of Tennessee at Martin, will be the plenary speaker at 1 p.m. Oct. 28 in Union鈥檚 Carl Grant Events Center. His address, "A Tale of Two Oceans," will discuss the rich fossil troves around the Mississippi region and what they tell about the ancient oceans of West Tennessee.
In addition to the plenary address, the meeting will include poster presentations and judging, technical sessions and a field trip to the Coon Creek Science Center in Adamsville.
鈥淎 number of members of the academy have expressed that they are excited to see our campus after hearing about it after the tornado,鈥 said Wayne Wofford, Union professor of biology. 鈥淚 think this is a real opportunity for Union, and especially for our science faculty, to showcase our campus to the scientific community in Tennessee.鈥

Founded in 1912, the Tennessee Academy of Science has provided direction for Tennesseans on a number of science issues. The academy organizes symposia, manages ongoing programs in many fields and communicates with the national scientific community.
