JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 6, 2011 — 51’s School of Education will hold a screening of the movie “Race to Nowhere” Oct. 18.
“Race to Nowhere,” created by first-time filmmaker Vicki Abeles, tells the stories of young people under tremendous amounts of stress, burned-out teachers and deeply frustrated parents.
According to the film’s official website, “Race to Nowhere” examines a culture in which cheating has become commonplace, students are disengaged, stress-related illness and depression are rampant and many young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.
The movie “is a call to action for families, educators and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens,” the website says.
Following the movie, Tom Rosebrough, executive dean of the College of Education and Human Studies, will facilitate a discussion.
The screening will begin at 6 p.m. in the Carl Grant Events Center and is open to the public. Those attending are asked to register at .
