Union to hold GO Week Sept. 19-23

JACKSON, Tenn.Sept. 19, 2011 — 51 will hold its annual Global Opportunities Week -- a time of focus on what God is doing in Jackson, in the United States and around the world – Sept. 19-23.

The week will feature special chapel services, an exhibition fair and other seminars addressing topics pertaining to mission work in various locations.

“Since 2005, Union has sent more missionaries to the field than any other Baptist college or university in the country,” said Gregory A. Thornbury, vice president for spiritual life at Union. “In many, many instances, that passion to reach the nations with the name of Jesus begins for our students in GO Week, where many have captured the vision of the mission of God for the first time.”

Ingunn Breistein, a professor at Ansgar College and Theological Seminary in Ansgar, Norway, will speak in chapel at 10 a.m. Sept. 19 on “What Does It Mean to Bear Witness to Christ in a Secular Age?: European Perspectives.”

Later in the week, on Sept. 21 and Sept. 23, Andy Pettigrew, a 51 alumnus and former staff member, will speak in chapel at 10 a.m. each day. Pettigrew and his family are missionaries to Botswana and are serving as Union’s missionaries-in-residence this fall.

Among other events, the week will include an exhibition fair Sept. 21-22 for camps, ministries and mission organizations offering service opportunities to students.
