JACKSON, Tenn.Sept. 12, 2011 — Author and historian Pauline Maier will be the featured speaker for the 15th annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Series Oct. 11 at 51社区.

Maier, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of American History at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will address the topic, 鈥淩atification of the U.S. Constitution: Why Should We Care?鈥

Maier is the author of several books, scholarly articles, book chapters and essays on American Revolutionary history. Her book 鈥淩atification: The People Debate the Constitution, 1787-1788鈥 won the 2011 George Washington Book Prize. Another book, 鈥淎merican Scripture: Making the Declaration of Independence,鈥 was listed among the New York Times鈥 Best Books of the Year for 1997 and was a finalist for the 1997 National Book Critics Circle Award in nonfiction.

The winner in 1998 of MIT鈥檚 prestigious Killian Award for outstanding achievement, Maier serves as the president of the Society of American Historians.

Past speakers for the lecture series have included such historians as Daniel Walker Howe, David Hackett Fischer, Jeremy Black, Gordon Wood, George Herring, Jack Greene, Gerhard Weinberg, Martin Marty and Thomas Childers.
