JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 12, 2011 — To better reflect the nature of the services it provides to students, Union鈥檚 career services office has changed its name to the Vocatio Center for Life Calling and Career.
鈥淥ur goal is to teach students holistically through a model that emphasizes vocation as ministry,鈥 said Jacqueline Taylor, assistant dean of students and director of the Vocatio Center. 鈥淥ur true hope is to instill in our students the necessity for pursuing God鈥檚 call through a transformed and renewed mind in service to others.鈥
鈥淰ocatio鈥 is the Latin word for 鈥渃alling,鈥 Taylor said, and the new name will communicate to students a component of the 鈥淯nion 2012鈥 long-range plan that was designed to help students think about their work as a calling, and not just a job.
In addition to the name change, the office will seek to expand its services in the future. Taylor said the Vocatio Center will continue with discipline-specific partnerships with faculty to promote life calling and career development. The center will also offer additional discipline-specific initiatives -- such as career expos, lectures and comprehensive gifts assessments -- that will focus on the goals of servant leadership.
鈥淔inally, the Vocatio Center will offer services which provide skilled expertise in employment preparation and professional development to the greater community,鈥 Taylor said.
