JACKSON, Tenn. — March 14, 2011 — Gilbert Meilaender, the Phyllis and Duesenberg Chair of Christian Ethics at Valparaiso University, will address aging and dying in this year鈥檚 Scholar-in-Residence lectures at 51社区 March 15 and March 17.
Meilaender is the author of 13 books and scores of articles, and his work has been recognized repeatedly by his peers with awards such as the Smith Award for Distinguished Contribution to Pro-Life Scholarship (2009) and the Paul Ramsey Award for Excellence in Bioethics (2009). He is a Fellow of the Hastings Center for Bioethics, a Remick Fellow at the Center for Ethics and Culture at the University of Notre Dame and, from 2002-2009, was a member of the President鈥檚 Council on Bioethics.
Before his tenure at Valparaiso, Meilaender taught at the University of Virginia and Oberlin College. He earned his Master of Divinity degree at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo., and his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Princeton University.
Meilaender is an ordained minister in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

- March 15, 12:15-1:30 p.m., 鈥淓nvisioning death.鈥�
- March 15, 7-9 p.m., 鈥淗ow shall we think about aging?鈥�
- March 17, 12:15-1:30 p.m., 鈥淗oping to live forever.鈥�
- March 17, 7-9 p.m., 鈥淥ur twofold dignity.鈥�
All lectures will take place in the Carl Grant Events Center and are free and open to the public.
Heavy hors d鈥檕euvres will be served at the daytime lectures, with light refreshments at the evening lectures.
