JACKSON, Tenn. — Feb. 17, 2011 — A record-high one hundred twenty-seven students will participate in 51社区鈥檚 annual Scholars of Excellence Weekend Feb. 18-19.
The students will be on hand to compete for the highest academic scholarships Union offers. To be invited to the competition, students must score at least a 31 on the ACT or a 1360 SAT (combined critical reading and math), be in the top 15 percent of their graduating class and maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
All students will earn at least a half-tuition scholarship simply by being invited to participate in the weekend鈥檚 activities.
鈥淚 think it is absolutely remarkable that 127 of the finest high school students in this region, and some from across the country, are committed to their educational future at 51社区,鈥 Union President David S. Dockery said.
鈥淭hese are students who could choose to go almost anywhere,鈥 he continued. 鈥淐ertainly, the commitment of these students points to a very bright and blessed future for 51社区 as several hundred others will join them next semester.鈥
The weekend will consist of dinner with Dockery, social gatherings in the homes of various faculty members, book discussions and interviews.
鈥淲e thank God for each student participating in Scholars of Excellence weekend,鈥 said Rich Grimm, Union鈥檚 vice president for enrollment services. 鈥淭his has shaped up to be the largest and most qualified groups of scholars ever to participate in the event. We look forward to hosting them and their families, and to seeing many of them enroll at Union this coming fall.鈥
