JACKSON, Tenn. — Feb. 1, 2011 — Renita J. Weems, author and vice president of academic affairs at American Baptist College, will be the keynote speaker for 51社区鈥檚 fourth annual Black History Month program Feb. 14.
Weems, who has a doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary, will examine the African American leadership that emerged during and after the Civil War. The theme for the program is 鈥淏eing the Change: African American Leaders from Civil War to Social Justice.鈥�
鈥淚t is our sincere hope that this event will serve as a catalyst for serious debate regarding the necessity for continued and innovative leadership throughout the black community within the context of a Christian worldview,鈥� said Jacqueline Taylor, Union鈥檚 assistant dean of students.
In addition to Weems鈥� address, the event will feature music by pianist Patricia Porter and 51社区鈥檚 Mosaic Gospel Choir.
A reception will begin at 2:30 p.m. with the program starting at 3 p.m. in the Carl Grant Events Center. The event is open to the community. Seating is limited, so those planning to attend should make reservations by Feb. 7 at noon.
