JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 17, 2011 — Pastor and author David Platt will be the featured speaker at the Read the Bible for Life conference April 15-16 at 51社区.
The conference, sponsored by Union鈥檚 R.C. Ryan Center for Biblical Studies, will address the topic of biblical literacy and is part of the 鈥淩ead the Bible for Life鈥� biblical literacy initiative by George Guthrie, the Benjamin W. Perry Professor of Bible at Union.
鈥淭he problem of biblical illiteracy is significant, particularly in the church,鈥� said Ray Van Neste, director of the Ryan Center and associate professor of biblical studies. 鈥淔or individuals and churches to be healthy, we must know and understand the Scriptures well.鈥�
Van Neste said the conference will address such topics as effective Bible study, training others to study the Bible, understanding the overarching storyline of the Bible and available resources for personal and small group use.
Platt, pastor of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Ala., and author of 鈥淩adical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream,鈥� will give three plenary addresses during the two-day conference.
In addition to Platt鈥檚 addresses, the conference will feature a panel discussion with Platt, Guthrie and recording artist and author Michael Card, who will also lead a breakout session. Guthrie will lead breakout sessions for those wanting to use the 鈥淩ead the Bible for Life鈥� curriculum in their churches.
Other breakout sessions will be led by faculty members from Union鈥檚 School of Theology and Missions.
Cost for the conference is $60, or $50 for groups of 10 or more or those who register before March 23. Registration deadline is April 6. Registration fee includes the entire conference, two meals and a continental breakfast.
