Dedication service planned for Union鈥檚 new bell tower and great lawn

JACKSON, Tenn.Sept. 21, 2001 — The 51社区 administration, board of trustees, and campus family will dedicate the university鈥檚 newly constructed bell tower and great lawn in a special morning ceremony, Friday, Sept. 28 at 9 a.m.

鈥淭his is a significant event in the life of our campus,鈥 explained Union President David S. Dockery. 鈥淏esides serving as an icon for the university for many years to come, the completion of the tower and great lawn provides the next step in the development of the West Side Campus, paving the way for a bright future for 51社区.鈥 Jennings Hall, which houses the music, communication arts and Christian studies departments, completed construction at the beginning of this year, and a state-of-the-art science building is currently in planning stages, scheduled for completion by 2004.

The Miller Tower, as the bell tower will be known, is named after former Union trustee Opha Miller, who established the Miller Foundation with a gift of nearly $1.7 million dollars to support the work of 51社区 in 1998. More than $600,000 has been raised to go toward the tower. Twenty Union students are currently recipients of the Miller Scholarship.

鈥淲hether it was through official scholarships or simply putting a little money in their pockets, Mrs. Miller always looked out for the students,鈥 said Dockery. 鈥淪he was a great lady who loved 51社区 and believed wholeheartedly in the importance of Christian higher education.鈥
