JACKSON, Tenn. — Sept. 13, 2010 — The Tennessee Communication Association has named 51社区 broadcasting professor Steve Beverly as its Educator of the Year.
The announcement came during the TCA annual conference Sept. 10-11 at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Web Drake, chairman of Union鈥檚 communication arts department, said the award was based largely upon Beverly鈥檚 oversight of 鈥淛ackson 24/7,鈥 a daily 30-minute news broadcast produced in Jennings Hall鈥檚 broadcast studio and aired on EPlusTV 6 in Jackson. Union broadcasting students handle such responsibilities as anchoring, reporting, directing and producing the program.
鈥淭his is a great honor for Mr. Beverly and clearly demonstrates an understanding on the part of his fellow educators of the hard work, creativity and educational value of 鈥楯ackson 24/7,鈥欌 said Web Drake, chairman of the communication arts department. 鈥淲hat Mr. Beverly is doing with our students is virtually unprecedented in terms of combining academic curriculum with service to the institution, service to the community and practical experience for the students.鈥
Chris Blair, associate professor of communication arts, nominated Beverly for the award.
