JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 18, 2010 — 51社区 will recognize Black History Month Feb. 12 with a special chapel service and the third annual Black History Month program.
K. Edward Copeland, senior pastor of New Zion Baptist Church in Rockford, Ill., will speak in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel that morning at 10 a.m. Jeff Wilson, assistant professor of education for the University of Memphis higher education leadership program, will be the keynote speaker for the afternoon program in the Carl Grant Events Center. Wilson will examine the history of black collegians in his address.
鈥淚t is our prayer that this event will not only enlighten the community about the positive impact of black people throughout the history of higher education, but we equally hope that this program will generate a genuine appreciation and understanding of black history,鈥� said Jacqueline Taylor, Union鈥檚 assistant dean of students.
In addition to Wilson鈥檚 address, the event will feature music by pianist Patricia Porter, 51社区鈥檚 Mosaic Gospel Choir and guest violist Dorthy Okpebholo.
Hors d鈥檕euvres will be served at 3 p.m. with the program beginning at 3:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the community, but seating is limited. Those planning to attend should make reservations by Feb. 10 at noon by calling (731) 661-5421 or (731) 661-5316.
