JACKSON, Tenn. — Nov. 3, 2009 — 51社区 will show the documentary 鈥淯rban Assault: Escape from Poverty鈥� Nov. 10.
Using Nashville as a typical city, the film includes interviews and narratives of people who have overcome the bondage of poverty, and examines some of the solutions for alleviating it. Stories in the documentary include a former kingpin drug hustler named Killer who is now a successful business owner and a mother of three, born and raised in poverty, who is now a homeowner setting a higher standard for her children.
Following the 80-minute film, a panel of experts, including Lisa Peoples of Area Relief Ministries and Monique Merriweather of the city of Jackson鈥檚 crime prevention initiative, will discuss the documentary and the issues it addresses.
Sponsored by the Center for Just and Caring Communities at the 51社区 School of Social Work, the Madison County Community Advisory Board and the Southwest Council on Children and Youth, the screening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium, located in the Barefoot Student Union Building. It is free and open to the public.
