Henry Institute to show documentary on stem cell research

JACKSON, Tenn.Nov. 2, 2009 — The Carl F.H. Henry Institute for Intellectual Discipleship at 51 will show the film “Lines That Divide,” a documentary about stem cell research, Nov. 12.

Jennifer Lahl, the film’s associate producer and founder and national director of the Center for Bioethics and Culture Network, will be on hand for the screening. Lahl has more than 25 years experience as a pediatric critical care nurse, hospital administrator and senior-level nursing manager. Her writings have appeared in such publications as the San Francisco Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News and the American Journal of Bioethics.

As a field expert Lahl is routinely interviewed on radio and television including ABC, CBC, PBS and NPR, and called upon to speak alongside lawmakers and members of the scientific community. She was invited to speak to members of the European Parliament in Brussels to address egg trafficking.

“Lines That Divide” is a documentary that “seeks to educate the public on the scientific basics of stem cell research and the moral issues surrounding it as we enter the 21st century,” according to the film’s Web site at . The film introduces the basic science of stem cells and how they are gathered for medical use, and introduces such moral issues as human life and the medical use of embryos.

Scientists, doctors and ethicists with differing opinions on these matters weigh in with their views.

The screening will take place in the Carl Grant Events Center from 7-9 p.m. Following the 57-minute film, Lahl and C. Ben Mitchell, the Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy at Union, will lead a discussion about the documentary and the issues it addresses.

The event is free and open to the public.
