JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 22, 2009 — Christians and the environment will be the topic for the next Town and Gown series at 51社区 on Monday nights Oct. 26-Nov. 23.
The Town and Gown series is an opportunity for community members interested in various topics to attend lectures and participate in discussions in a classroom setting. The classes are free and open to the public.
The lectures in this Town and Gown installment will seek to address the question, 鈥淗ow should environmental stewardship be practiced?鈥 The first session each evening will begin at 6 p.m., with the second session beginning at 8 p.m. The final week will consist only of one session beginning at 6 p.m.
The schedule of topics for the class is as follows:
- Oct. 26, session 1: 鈥淕oing Green 鈥 A Theologian鈥檚 Perspective,鈥 by Ben Mitchell, Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy; session 2: 鈥淕oing Green -- a Scientist鈥檚 Perspective,鈥 by James Huggins, university professor of biology.
- Nov. 2, session 1: 鈥淎 Christian View of Environmental Politics,鈥 by Sean Evans, associate professor of political science; session 2:鈥漈he Practice of Environmental Stewardship in Agriculture,鈥 by Beth Madison, assistant professor of science.
- Nov. 9, session 1: 鈥淭he Importance of Recycling,鈥 by Vaughn Cassidy, recycling coordinator for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation; session 2: 鈥淐ase-in-Point -- The Practice and Success of the Recycling Program at 51社区,鈥 by Kimberly Thornbury, dean of students, and representatives from Aramark.
- Nov. 16, session 1: 鈥淭he Ozone Depletion Problem and Solution,鈥 by Michael Hayes, visiting professor of chemistry; session 2: 鈥淕lobal Warming and Its Impact on Wildlife Populations,鈥 by Andy Madison, associate professor of biology.
- Nov. 23: panel discussion with various speakers from the series.
