JACKSON, Tenn. — June 5, 2009 — The 51社区 women鈥檚 basketball team raised more than $12,000 worth of food and donations as part of a food drive to benefit the Children's Hunger Fund.
鈥淚n a day and time when athletics is so over-glorified, it is great to be able to use athletics to benefit others,鈥 Coach Mark Campbell said. 鈥淚t is also a great thing to watch the team work so hard and enjoy a project like this.鈥
Union鈥檚 Christina Ray, who will be a senior on the 2009-10 team, led the group of players in this project.
鈥淐hristina was on task for the entire month and did an unbelievable job with this project,鈥 Campbell said. 鈥淚 am very proud of her.鈥
The players gathered 120 boxes of food, and more than $9,000 in donations. All of the food and money gathered will benefit children in Mexico and southern California.
The Children鈥檚 Hunger Fund is North America鈥檚 top cost efficient charity, as rated by Forbes magazine.
After a successful first year, the players look forward to doing this project again and hope to get more people involved next year.
