Screwtape brings new light to spiritual warfare

JACKSON, Tenn.Aug. 31, 2001 — “Screwtape,” a play based on The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, will be performed at 51, Sept. 6, 7, 8 and 10 in the university’s W.D. Powell Theatre at 8 p.m. each evening.

This comic-drama, directed by Union junior theatre major Jimmy Hopper, is the story of Apprentice Tempter Wormwood and his first assignment to capture the soul of Michael Green. Wormwood, with the assistance of his uncle and instructor Screwtape, and the female “sexpert” Slumtrimpet, wage spiritual war to claim the “patient” for their father below.

According to Hopper, this is a take on spiritual warfare “from the other side.”

“So many times, unfortunately, we as Christians are too busy bickering among ourselves to do any good for others,” explained Hopper. “The same thing is true with these demons in the play – they’re so busy trying to one-up each other, that they fail to accomplish what they have set out to do, which in their case, is to do harm.”

Cast members include Union graduate and staff member Todd Lewis as Screwtape, Union sophomores Jake Bell and Lindsay Garner, and Union graduate and Henderson Baptist music minister Bret Scott. The rest of the cast is made up of various high school students from around the area.

Tickets for the show are $3 for students and $7 for adults and are available at Davis-Kidd Booksellers and at the door. For more information, contact the theatre at (731) 661-5105.
