JACKSON, Tenn. — Aug. 31, 2001 — 鈥淪crewtape,鈥� a play based on The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, will be performed at 51社区, Sept. 6, 7, 8 and 10 in the university鈥檚 W.D. Powell Theatre at 8 p.m. each evening.
This comic-drama, directed by Union junior theatre major Jimmy Hopper, is the story of Apprentice Tempter Wormwood and his first assignment to capture the soul of Michael Green. Wormwood, with the assistance of his uncle and instructor Screwtape, and the female 鈥渟expert鈥� Slumtrimpet, wage spiritual war to claim the 鈥減atient鈥� for their father below.
According to Hopper, this is a take on spiritual warfare 鈥渇rom the other side.鈥�
鈥淪o many times, unfortunately, we as Christians are too busy bickering among ourselves to do any good for others,鈥� explained Hopper. 鈥淭he same thing is true with these demons in the play 鈥� they鈥檙e so busy trying to one-up each other, that they fail to accomplish what they have set out to do, which in their case, is to do harm.鈥�
Cast members include Union graduate and staff member Todd Lewis as Screwtape, Union sophomores Jake Bell and Lindsay Garner, and Union graduate and Henderson Baptist music minister Bret Scott. The rest of the cast is made up of various high school students from around the area.
