JACKSON, Tenn. — Aug. 30, 2001 — The premiere strings and piano ensemble, The Merling Trio, will launch this year鈥檚 Lyceum Series at 51社区, Monday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Hartley Hall.
Founded in 1988, the international ensemble brings together musicians from Polish, Japanese and Dutch backgrounds, and has performed numerous recitals throughout Canada and the United States, including a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall.
The trio has recently released a second CD that includes works by Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, Shumann and Liszt. Their first CD, released in 1995, is titled 鈥淭he Merling Trio performs works of C. Curtis-Smith.鈥
In residence at the School of Music at Western Michigan University, members of the trio are also faculty members at the prestigious ENCORE School for Strings and at the Lancut Festival in Poland.
In addition to the concert, The Merling Trio will give a lecture and demonstration earlier that day at noon in Hartley Hall on the music they will perform that evening including works from Turina, Piazzolla and Schubert.
Lyceum is a committee of Union faculty members that is dedicated to promoting the arts through sponsoring programs featuring music, literature, drama and the visual arts consistent with the university鈥檚 mission statement.
