Cooper wins second place in history paper competition

JACKSON, Tenn.March 19, 2009 — 51社区 senior history major Kathleen Cooper won second place in the Jo Helen Imani Beard Civil Rights History Paper Competition at the Ninth Annual Civil Rights Conference Feb. 20-27 at the University of Tennessee-Martin.

Cooper鈥檚 paper dealt with a Negro League baseball team in Memphis and was entitled, 鈥淭he Memphis Red Sox: Barely Hanging On, 1947-1960.鈥

Alice-Catherine Carls, the Tom Elam Distinguished Professor of History at UTM, presented Cooper with the second-place certificate and check for $200 in a special ceremony at 51社区 March 6.

Cooper and two other history majors-- Joshua Abbotoy and Hannah Holliday --also presented papers at the Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville Feb. 28.

History faculty members Keith Bates, Stephen Carls and Judy LeForge accompanied the students to Clarksville.
