JACKSON, Tenn. — Feb. 10, 2009 — Harrell Carter, president of the Jackson-Madison County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, will be the keynote speaker for 51社区鈥檚 second annual Black History Month program Feb. 20.
Carter will examine the life of Carter G. Woodson, founder of Black History Month, and will share insights regarding the necessity of celebrating the accomplishments and history of black Americans.
鈥淲e hope that this historical event will enlighten the community about the positive impact of African-Americans throughout time, and we equally hope that this program will generate a genuine appreciation of Black History Month as an educational must for the entire community,鈥� said Jacque Taylor, Union鈥檚 assistant dean of students and director of career services. 鈥淲e desire for the entire community to gain knowledge and understanding of what Carter G. Woodson truly accomplished upon founding Black History Month. His achievement ultimately served to greatly enrich the overall education of our nation.鈥�
In addition to Carter鈥檚 address, the event will feature music by pianist Patricia Porter, 51社区鈥檚 Mosaic Gospel Choir, the Dugger Family Praise Team and professional artist and Union alumnus Will Gray. Mosaic student members will also present biographical sketches of key black historical figures.
The event will begin with refreshments at 5 p.m., with the program starting at 5:30 in the Harvey Auditorium, located in the Barefoot Student Union Building on Union鈥檚 campus. The event is free and open to the community, but seating is limited and reservations are requested by Feb. 18 at noon.
