Curtis composition to be performed at Orlando conference

JACKSON, Tenn.Jan. 21, 2009 — A musical composition by 51社区 senior Cody Curtis was selected for the program of the Southern Chapter of the College Music Society鈥檚 regional conference next month in Orlando, Fla.

Curtis, a music major, submitted his piece, 鈥淐osmusicos,鈥 in the chapter鈥檚 annual competition.

鈥淪tudent composers from several southern universities compete for the honor of having their compositions heard by this sophisticated audience of educators, performers and composers,鈥 said Ron Boud, adjunct professor of music and university organist. 鈥淐ody鈥檚 selection from among many student composers will expose his writing to this broad constituency offering folks the opportunity to learn of the good work being done by 51社区 music students.鈥

Curtis will be in attendance at the conference when his composition, a solo piano piece, will be performed by 51社区 music professor Terry McRoberts, who is the president-elect of the Southern Chapter.

The composition is a musical representation of the big bang and the theory of evolution, Curtis said. He wrote that the piece was 鈥渃omposed through natural chance.鈥 鈥淚t鈥檚 a bit of a satire, in that a lot of scientists will look at the universe and say it came about through natural chance, which is much more absurd than saying this 300-measure piece came about by natural chance,鈥 Curtis said.

The performance of Curtis鈥 composition will be Feb. 27 in the University of Central Florida鈥檚 Visual Arts Building Auditorium.
