World War II expert to lecture at Union Oct. 30

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 23, 2008 — World War II scholar Jeremy Black will be the featured speaker for the 12th annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Series Oct. 30 at 51社区.

Black, professor of history at the University of Exeter in England, will address the topic, 鈥淲hy the Allies Won World War II.鈥

Black is the author of more than 70 books, including 鈥淭he Holocaust,鈥 鈥淕eorge III: America鈥檚 Last King,鈥 鈥淭he Age of Total War, 1860-1945,鈥 鈥淲orld War II: A Military History鈥 and 鈥淎merica as a Military Power, 1775-1865.鈥

He is also a member of the Order of the British Empire and a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia.

Past speakers for the lecture series have included Edward L. Ayers from the University of Richmond, Gordon Wood from Brown University, George Herring from the University of Kentucky, Jack Greene from Johns Hopkins University, Gerhard Weinberg from the University of North Carolina, Martin Marty from the University of Chicago and Thomas Childers from the University of Pennsylvania.

The lecture will begin at 7:15 p.m. in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel on the Union campus. It is free and open to the public.

He will also give a free lecture to the Union community in Harvey Auditorium at 1:40 p.m. that day on 鈥淲ar, Technology and the Rise of the West: 1450-2008 Reconsidered.鈥
