JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 15, 2008 — 51’s theater department will present the musical comedy “Smoke on the Mountain” Oct. 23-28 in the W.D. Powell Theatre.

Written by Connie Ray and conceived by Alan Bailey, the performance will feature a seven-piece orchestra and nearly 30 southern gospel/bluegrass songs.

The play is set in the 1930s and introduces the Sanders Family Singers, who perform their songs for the rural Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant, N.C.

“It’s almost like you’re coming to church,” said 51 theater professor David Burke, who will direct the production.

The show will begin at 8 p.m. each night, with the exception of the performance on Sunday, Oct. 26, which will begin at 2:30 p.m.

In addition, a dinner theater will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 24-25 in the Carl Grant Events Center. Tickets for the dinner theater are $20 or two for $35.

General admission tickets to the show are $7 and are available at the theater’s box office. Tickets for Union students, faculty and staff are $3.
