JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 14, 2008 — 51’s Career Services office will host the eighth annual Career “U”niversity Oct. 23 to provide students with career advice and a chance to meet with recruiters.
Career U is an academic approach to career planning and preparation focused on explaining current career topics like the seven-stage interview process, avoiding the recruitment pitfalls of Facebook and MySpace, getting into graduate school and win-win salary negotiation.
The event is open to students majoring in business, professional studies or any of the liberal arts. It runs from noon– 4:30 p.m. in the Barefoot Student Union Building.
“In this economic downturn, we are excited that top employers are coming to 51 to recruit our best and brightest,” said Jacqueline Taylor, assistant dean of students and director of career services. “Despite the loss of 159,000 jobs across the nation in the month of September, our December and May graduates can take full advantage of this great opportunity to be recruited for professional internships and full-time positions with strong companies.”
Among the presenters at Career U this year will be professionals from Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, FedEx, Regions Bank and the University of Memphis, as well as Union faculty and administrators.
Recruiting companies and corporate sponsors for the 2008 Career U are Procter & Gamble, FedEx, LifeWay Christian Resources, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, TEK Systems; Northwestern Mutual Financial Network; the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, C.H. Robinson, Wal-Mart and The Jackson Sun.
