ATO, PAT chapters win national awards

JACKSON, Tenn.Sept. 18, 2008 — Two 51社区 organizations recently won national awards for the quality of their work.

The Beta Tau chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity received the True Merit Award in August at the fraternity鈥檚 bi-annual congress in Louisville, Ky.

The award recognizes the top ATO chapters in the country. The winning chapters must excel in community service, campus service, campus leadership, brotherhood, recruitment, communications and scholarship.

鈥淔or Union to have been chosen as one of the recipients of this award speaks highly not only of the chapter, but the institution,鈥 said Josh Clarke, who serves on the board of trustees for Union鈥檚 ATO chapter.

Another organization, the Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, won the Best Chapter Award for the sixth straight year from the national Phi Alpha Theta organization.

Phi Alpha Theta is a history honor society. As part of the award, the chapter receives $250 to purchase history books for the Union library.

Because of its six straight years of winning the Best Chapter Award, the Union chapter also earned the Nels A. Cleven Award.

鈥淭here aren鈥檛 that many Phi Alpha Theta chapters nationwide that earn Best Chapter Awards, so I consider ourselves honored to be at that level in the national organization,鈥 said history professor and Phi Alpha Theta adviser Stephen Carls.
