Union鈥檚 MSW program cleared for next step in accreditation process

JACKSON, Tenn.May 6, 2008 — 51社区鈥檚 new Master of Social Work program has cleared the first hurdle in the accreditation process, and will receive a visit from the Council of Social Work Education in the fall.

The CSWE accrediting body recently approved the MSW program鈥檚 鈥渂enchmark one document,鈥 which included such items as course syllabi, academic standards, field manual and student handbook.

After the CSWE visit in the fall, the group will meet in February to determine whether to grant candidacy to Union鈥檚 MSW program, according to Mary Anne Poe, chair of Union鈥檚 social work department.

鈥淥ur Master of Social Work degree is beginning in the fall, and we are now accepting applications,鈥 Poe said. 鈥淭he program won鈥檛 be accredited immediately, but that is standard procedure for new academic programs. Once we attain accreditation, it will apply to all students who were in the program from the beginning.鈥

In March, Union announced the hiring of Janet E. Furness as director for the MSW program.

For information on applying for the MSW program for the fall, contact Union鈥檚 social work department at (731) 661-5553 or e-mail rhudson@uu.edu.
