JACKSON, Tenn. — April 30, 2008 — American flags 鈥� 1,500 strong 鈥� are flying on the south lawn of the 51社区 campus through May 4 to help raise awareness for child abuse.
Each flag in the Flags of Freedom campaign represents a child who died from child abuse in the United States in 2006, the last year statistics were available. Fourteen of those deaths were in Tennessee.
The Jackson Exchange Club is sponsoring the program.
鈥淲hen you see it in a field like that, you see the big number that it represents,鈥� said Martin Jelinek of the Jackson Exchange Club, co-chair of the Flags of Freedom campaign.
In addition to child abuse victims, the flags also honor the men and women who have served the country in various capacities 鈥� military, first responders, emergency workers, police, firefighters and medical personnel.
The public is invited to a dedication ceremony for the display May 2 at 11:30 a.m. in Union鈥檚 Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
