JACKSON, Tenn. — May 7, 2008 — The 51 Opera Workshop will present the one-act opera “The Proposal” May 9 at 6 p.m. in the W.D. Powell Theater.
Union music professor Michael Penny will direct the opera, which is in English and lasts 45 minutes.
“The Proposal” was written by New Jersey composer Milton Granger, who is also a noted Broadway conductor and arranger. The cast consists of six female singers.
In “The Proposal,” a young woman receives a marriage proposal from her boyfriend. Before she accepts, she tells him she must consult the “board” and summons five alter egos: the 5-year-old, the security officer, the sensuous woman, the Statue of Liberty and Mother Teresa. Instead of offering consistent advice, these manifestations of herself only confuse the young woman and she must dismiss them before she can think clearly.
The cast consists of Union students Calli Hankins, Shannon Gardner, Nikki Fritts, Emma Robertson, Gillian Frank and Jillian Sims. Joan Forbes will serve as the accompanist.
“The Proposal” is free and open to the public. The W.D. Powell Theater is located in the Penick Academic Complex, next to the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel.
