History students win best paper prizes

JACKSON, Tenn.April 23, 2008 — Six 51社区 history students presented papers at the Tennessee Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference April 5 at the University of Tennessee-Martin.

Two students, Cameron Armstrong, a senior from Howell, Mich., and Mary Thompson, a senior from Millington, Tenn., won best paper prizes. Armstrong鈥檚 paper, 鈥淧rayer, Partnership, and Persecution: Southern Baptist Missions Behind the Iron Curtain, 1950-1960,鈥 won the award in the category of 鈥淓uropean History.鈥

Thompson鈥檚 paper, 鈥淭he Effect of Anti-German Propaganda During World War I on German-Americans in Tennessee,鈥 won the prize in 鈥淐ultural History.鈥

Other Union paper presenters were Brendon Kuhlman, Kathleen Cooper, Nikki Henry and Hannah Holliday. History professors Keith Bates, Stephen Carls, Jude LeForge and Terry Lindley accompanied the students to the conference.

Phi Alpha Theta is a national history honor society. Union鈥檚 chapter, the Delta-Psi chapter, was chartered in 1953 and is the oldest in Tennessee.
