Garcia to address racism in Feb. 1 lecture at Union

JACKSON, Tenn.Jan. 23, 2008 — Boston College philosophy professor Jorge L.A. Garcia will address the topic of racism in a Mars Hill Forum lecture Feb. 1 at 51社区.

Garcia is the author of the forthcoming book, 鈥淭he Heart of Racism: Essays on Diversity, Race, and Relativism鈥 and has also written several articles and essays on a wide range of topics in theoretical and applied ethics. He is an advisory board member for the Notre Dame Center for Ethics and Culture and a non-resident fellow with the Du Bois Institute at Harvard University.

The Mars Hill Forum Lectures are an initiative of the Carl F.H. Henry Center for Christian Leadership designed to foster Christian thinking about relevant contemporary issues. Past Mars Hill Forum speakers have included Os Guinness, Ken Myers, C. Ben Mitchell and Wendy Shalit.

鈥淲e are honored to host a professional ethicist and scholar of Dr. Garcia鈥檚 caliber for this Mars Hill Forum Lecture,鈥 said Justin Barnard, director of the Henry Center. 鈥淒r. Garcia embodies Christian scholarship at its finest, a rigorous intellect animated by charity and humility.

鈥淰ery few scholars have thought more deeply than Dr. Garcia about the philosophical nature of racism and its implications for the moral life,鈥 Barnard continued. 鈥淗e articulates the heart of the problem in a way that touches on both its simplicity and complexity.鈥

Garcia鈥檚 lecture will begin at 3:15 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium in the Barefoot Student Union Building. It is free and open to the public.
