JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 3, 2008 — Politics and policy will be the topic for the next Town and Gown series at 51社区 on Tuesday nights Jan. 8-Feb. 5.
鈥淭he purpose of the class is to inform people about the 2008 presidential campaign, including the campaign process, campaign strategies and the major issues facing the United States,鈥 said Sean Evans, chairman of the political science department at Union and coordinator this Town and Gown series.
The Town and Gown series is an opportunity for community members interested in various topics to attend lectures and participate in discussions in a classroom setting. The classes are free and open to the public.
The schedule of topics for the class is as follows:
Jan. 8, 6:30 p.m. 鈥 鈥淐ampaign process and strategy,鈥 led by Evans.
8 p.m. 鈥 鈥淔oreign policy,鈥 led by political science professor Kevin Cooney.
Jan. 15, 6:30 p.m. 鈥 鈥淪ocial policy,鈥 led by political science professor Micah Watson
8 p.m. 鈥 鈥淚mmigration,鈥 led by former U.S Congressman Ed Bryant, economics and management professor Kenny Holt and social work professor Mary Ann Poe.
Jan. 22, 6:30 p.m. 鈥 鈥淐ivil rights and civil liberties,鈥 led by Evans, Watson and business professor Roland Porter.
8 p.m. 鈥 鈥淗ealth care,鈥 led by Bryant, Evans and nursing professor Sharon Edwards.
Jan. 29, 6:30 p.m. 鈥 鈥淪ocial welfare,鈥 led by Poe, education professor Michele Atkins and sociology professor Naomi Larsen.
8 p.m. 鈥 鈥淓conomic and budget policy,鈥 led by Cooney, Evans and Holt.
Feb. 5, 6:30 p.m. 鈥 鈥淓nvironment/energy,鈥 led by Evans, continuing studies professor Beth Madison and Vaughn Cassidy of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
All classes will meet in Harvey Auditorium in the Barefoot Student Union Building.
