Union students win awards at BP journalism conference

JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 26, 2007 — 51社区 journalism students won 11 awards at the Baptist Press Collegiate Journalism Conference Oct. 11-13 in Nashville, Tenn.

鈥淥ur students have worked very hard to produce a quality student newspaper and the many writing and photography awards won during the competition is validation from others that their work as been of the highest quality,鈥 said Union journalism professor Michael Chute.

鈥淲hile they publish the Cardinal & Cream to provide the Union community with the best newspaper they can -- not to win awards -- it is definitely rewarding to have professionals in the field, who judged the competition, to confirm that the staff is producing an excellent newspaper.鈥

Those winning awards were:

  • Kyle Kurlick, first place in column writing, first place in news photo, first place in feature photo (color) and third place in portrait (color).

  • Stephanie Schroeder, first place in feature photo (black and white), second place in news photo.

  • Stephen Beckham, first place in portrait personality (color).

  • Allison Hayes, second place in the feature article category.

  • Matthew Diggs, second place in feature picture story (color).

  • Heather Phillips, second place in sports action photo (black and white).

  • Tyler Whetstone, third place in the feature article category.

In addition, Brittany Howerton served on the four-member Student Advisory Panel as part of the conference, photography professor Jim Veneman coordinated the photojournalism sessions and Chute led a session on coach writers and critiqued the yearbook entries.
