JACKSON, Tenn. — Aug. 29, 2007 — The Delta-Psi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at 51社区 has won the Best Chapter Award for the fifth straight year from the national Phi Alpha Theta organization.
Phi Alpha Theta is a history honor society. As part of the award, the Union library will receive $250 to purchase history books.
鈥淲ith this year鈥檚 $250 prize for the purchase of library books included, Phi Alpha Theta will have contributed more than $1,250 to the purchase of history books for our library during the past five years,鈥 said history professor and Phi Alpha Theta adviser Stephen Carls. 鈥淯nion鈥檚 chapter of Phi Alpha Theta was chartered in 1953, making it the oldest in the state of Tennessee, and that鈥檚 an honor we will always hold.鈥
Jack Tunstall, executive director of the national Phi Alpha Theta organization, praised the Union chapter as an example 鈥渢o all of our chapters.鈥
鈥淭he time and effort required to maintain such a high level of success is astounding, and we greatly appreciate the fact that you and your student members are willing to take on such a task,鈥 Tunstall wrote in a letter to Carls. 鈥淓very year we receive multiple applications for this award, but Delta-Psi is truly a step above the rest.鈥
Over the past year, Phi Alpha Theta chapter members at Union have presented papers at the regional conference in Nashville, participated in a service project at the Ames Plantation near Grand Junction, Tenn., dedicated and buried a time capsule on the Union campus and served as ushers for Union鈥檚 annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lecture Series, among other activities.
