JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 8, 2001 — For high school students wishing to improve in a specific class or just their study habits in general, 51社区 will offer two programs this spring to achieve that goal.
"The Baldridge Reading and Study Strategy Program" will once again be offered this spring to both high school and college students seeking to develop or improve their reading comprehension, and ultimately, test scores in school. Students who participate in the course generally increase their reading speed by 57%, with comprehension improved at an 86% rate, according to Carroll Griffin, assistant vice president for enrollment management and director of admissions and retention at Union. Included in the course will be a review of students' study habits along with time management skills.
The course will be offered Monday, Feb. 5 through Thursday, Feb. 8 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. each evening. The 4-day program requires advanced registration by Tuesday, Jan. 23 and costs $100 per student.
For those students struggling in a specific high school subject, a high school tutorial program will be offered by the university on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 - 4 p.m., beginning Feb. 13 through May 10. For a total of $35 for the twelve-week session, students will be tutored by trained 51社区 students on subjects including English, Math, Science, History, Psychology and the Social Sciences. All students in grades 9-12 are eligible - however, openings in the program are limited and will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students may register for this high school tutoring program by sending their $35 checks and registration information to the university's Admissions office, care of Lisa Brewer.
