Physics professor Hathcox dies at 64

JACKSON, Tenn.July 25, 2007 — 51社区 physics professor Kyle Hathcox died July 25 at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was 64.

Hathcox, the University Professor of Physics and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, had been diagnosed with leukemia in early July.

鈥淲e give thanks for his years of faithful service to 51社区 and for the lives of students and colleagues who were touched by his teaching and service,鈥 51社区 President David S. Dockery said. 鈥淲e are also thankful for Dr. Hathcox鈥檚 strong faith in Jesus Christ, and while we grieve his loss, we do so with the promise and hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.鈥

Hathcox began teaching at Union in 1974. He left in 1988 for a six-year stint at Gordon College, then returned to the Union faculty in 1994.

A native of Texas, Hathcox completed his bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚 and doctorate degrees from the University of North Texas.

He is survived by his wife Sandy, who is a part-time education professor at Union. They have three grown children 鈥 Alan, Susie and Peyton.

The funeral will be held in Hawkins, Texas, July 28.

Dockery announced the establishment of the Kyle Hathcox Memorial Scholarship for physics majors and minors. Donations can be sent to:

Dockery also announced that the physics and engineering offices at Union have been renamed the Kyle Hathcox Memorial Suite.
