Social work forum to address immigration issues

JACKSON, Tenn.March 13, 2007 — Jessica Baba of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition will be the featured speaker for a forum on immigration March 15 at 51社区.

Entitled 鈥淭he Changing Face of Tennessee: Immigration Issues, New Demographics, and Unique Opportunities,鈥 the forum will explore such issues as the changing demographics in Tennessee and the implication of those changes on society, as well as legislation concerning immigration and how it affects the community.

In addition, the forum will provide information on the Welcoming Tennessee Initiative, a campaign of the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition.

The forum will conclude Social Work Awareness Day on the Union campus. Local agencies will be on hand throughout the day to set up displays about their agency鈥檚 work.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a way for the whole campus to understand that social work is a broad, versatile field,鈥 said Mary Anne Poe, chair of Union鈥檚 social work department.

The forum will run 6:30-8 p.m. in Harvey Auditorium in the Barefoot Student Union Building. The event is free and open to the public.
