JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 31, 2006 — Five individuals will receive alumni awards Friday, Nov. 3, at the Alumni Awards Dinner as part of 51社区鈥檚 2006 Homecoming week.
The dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Coburn Dining Room in the Barefoot Student Union Building. Tickets are $14 and may be reserved by calling (800) 338-6644. The award winners were selected by the 51社区 National Alumni Association for their community leadership, professional success and loyalty to 51社区. Those receiving awards are:
-- Jimmy H. Davis, Distinguished Faculty/Staff Award. Davis serves as vice president of the university鈥檚 Germantown campus and is a 27-year veteran faculty member and administrator. After completing his Bachelor of Science degree at Union in 1970 with a major in physical organic chemistry, Davis later received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Illinois.
Davis is the co-author with 51社区 professor Harry Poe of two books: 鈥淪cience and Faith: An Evangelical Dialogue鈥� and 鈥淭he Designer Universe.鈥� He and his wife Christine Menzel have one son, Patrick Menzel Davis. They are active members of Germantown Baptist Church.
-- Donald R. Webb, Distinguished Service Award. A 1942 Union graduate, Webb received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry and was a dentist in Jackson, Tenn., for 42 years. He also served in the U.S. Army for five years before, during and after World War II.
Webb was integrally involved in the study, planning and implementation of Union鈥檚 relocation from downtown Jackson to its campus in north Jackson. He has served as a Union trustee and president of Union鈥檚 National Alumni Association.
A member of First Baptist Church in Jackson, Webb and his late wife Becky have two daughters, Becky Wilson and Carmen Anderson, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
-- Raymond A. 鈥淏uddy鈥� Boston, Distinguished Alumnus Award. Boston, pastor of First Baptist Church of Covington, Tenn., is a longtime Baptist pastor in West Tennessee who graduated from Union in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1963 and also studied at Oxford University.
Boston previously served for 26 years as pastor of First Baptist Church of Dyersburg, as well as pastor of First Baptist Church of Dresden and of First Baptist Church of Humboldt. He has been involved in partnership missions in five states as well as Canada, Venezuela and Honduras.
He and his wife Ann, 51社区 class of 1958, have two daughters, Marcy Ledbetter and Laurie Sharp, and four grandchildren.
-- David S. Dockery, Honorary Alumnus Award. Dockery has been president of 51社区 for the past decade, during which time Union has seen unprecedented growth in enrollment, in the number of donors to the university and in new academic programs and facilities.
A native of Alabama, Dockery received his bachelor鈥檚 degree from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, with master鈥檚 degrees from Grace Theological Seminary, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Texas Christian University. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in humanities from the University of Texas-Arlington.
He and his wife Lanese have three sons -- Jonathan, Benjamin and Timothy 鈥� and are active members of Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson.
-- Andrea Leigh McDaniel, Outstanding Young Achiever Award. McDaniel is a 1999 Union graduate, majoring in religion and philosophy, who serves at the U.S. Department of State as the Deputy White House Liaison. She previously worked at the White House in the Office of Presidential Personnel for about two years.
A native of Huntingdon, McDaniel is a member of the Tennessee State Society, serves as a volunteer for the Republican National Committee and is a fellow of the C.S. Lewis Institute. She is also an active member of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.
