JACKSON, Tenn. — Oct. 3, 2006 — The 51 Players will present David Auburn’s play “Proof,” beginning Oct. 12, at the university’s W.D. Powell Theatre.
“Proof,” a winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award, is a play about a young woman, Catherine, who has spent years taking care of her intelligent, yet disturbed, father -- Robert, a professor and famous mathematician. After his death, Catherine must come to terms with her own unsteady emotions, while dealing with her alienated sister, Claire, and a former student of her father’s, Hal.
The play features junior Jill Casey as Catherine, sophomore Matt Stimmel as Hal and senior Courtney Braswell as Claire.
The play also features staff member Paul Sorrell, coordinator of interlibrary loans, as Robert.
“To me, it’s a beautifully crafted play that grapples with the fine line between sanity and insanity, reality and fantasy,” said David Burke, director of the show. “So, in the play we’re trying to come to grips with what that means.”
The University Players will also perform “Proof” in a competition at the American Theatre College Festival at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. The festival is through the Tennessee Theatre Association and runs the last weekend in October.
“Proof” will run Oct. 12-17 at 8 p.m. nightly, with the exception of the Oct. 15 matinee, which will begin at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $7 for general admission, or $3 for Union students, faculty and staff.
