Union music professors to take part in key events

JACKSON, Tenn.June 21, 2006 — Two 51社区 music professors have been selected to participate in prestigious events in June.

Stan Warren, associate professor of music, will sing Benjamin Britten鈥檚 鈥淲ar Requiem鈥 in South Korea with the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra. The performances are June 24 in Daejeon and June 25 in Seoul. The conductor is Shinik Hahm, who is a faculty member at Yale University.

Richard Joiner, chairman of Union鈥檚 music department, has been invited to participate in a Calvin College seminar on 鈥淭he Transformation of Christian Worship: Recent History of Protestant and Catholic Practices.鈥 The seminar will take place June 26-July 7 on Calvin鈥檚 campus in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Seminar participants will study several primary source documents relating to such topics as the charismatic movement, church growth movement, hymn renaissance and postmodern cultural patterns. Joiner said he hopes the seminar will lead to personal research on what worship can be for Baptists in the 21st century.

鈥淭hese special opportunities speak volumes about the quality of the 51社区 music program,鈥 Union President David S. Dockery said.
