Freshmen registration tops 400

JACKSON, Tenn.June 2, 2006 — More than 400 incoming freshman signed up for fall classes during 51社区鈥檚 early registration day.

When combined with transfer registrations, it is thought to be the largest number of entering students to enroll on a single day in the university鈥檚 183-year history.

鈥淚t was truly a wonderful day in every respect,鈥 said Rich Grimm, vice president for enrollment services. 鈥淚 know I speak for the entire university family; it was a joy to be able to serve our new students and their families today.鈥

Incoming students had an opportunity to meet potential roommates, see where they will reside on campus and meet with academic advisors.

鈥淭his class promises to be one of the largest and one of the best that we have ever had,鈥 Union President David S. Dockery said. 鈥淟egacies, children of faculty and staff, trustee children and grandchildren, offspring of the Christian leaders across the country, local, international, students from across the country--it is an outstanding class in every way.鈥

Although final numbers for the incoming class won鈥檛 be available until late August, Dockery told students and parents at a picnic luncheon Union鈥檚 total fall enrollment is likely to exceed 3,000 for the first time.

In addition to the freshmen, 53 transfer students also registered for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 30.

The June event was the first of three opportunities for early registration. Two additional registration dates are July 17 and Aug. 18.
