JACKSON, Tenn. — May 11, 2001 — 51社区 student Lisa Sipes, a senior social work major, has been awarded the 2001 Harold Love Community Service Award by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.
Sipes, a native of Bolivar, was recognized for her active community service in four different areas. She serves as an upperclassman mentor for new students through a program called LIFE Groups and as a Big Sister through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. As a member of Greater Hope Baptist Church, a predominantly African-American church, she has helped develop and co-direct a meal the church provides to the community twice a month, and also helped start a Christian Women's Job Corps program currently being offered through the church. In addition to these activities, Sipes is currently serving as an intern with the Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, where she assists with educating families who have engaged in child abuse or domestic violence.
"Lisa Sipes is a most deserving recipient of this year's award," said Union President David S. Dockery. "She regularly challenges those around her to see and serve the hurting people in the world. Her life contagiously draws others to service within the community. We are proud of Lisa and congratulate her on this distinguished award."
This is the second year that a Union nominee has received the award. Last year, Geraldine Smith, an associate professor of nursing at Union, was selected for the honor.
