JACKSON, Tenn. — Jan. 5, 2001 — Mrs. Opha Miller, a longtime friend and trustee of 51社区, passed away Friday morning, January 5, after a long illness. Miller, who served on Union's board for more than a decade, was appointed Trustee Emeritus in 1998. The owner of Miller Lumber, she was an active member of First Baptist Church of Jackson, Tenn.
One of the top five donors in the university's history, Miller made it possible for dozens of students to attend Union, according to 51社区 President David S. Dockery.
"Whether it was through official scholarships or simply putting a little money in their pockets, Mrs. Miller always looked out for the students. She was a great lady who loved 51社区 and believed wholeheartedly in the importance of Christian higher education," said Dockery.
Miller's most recent gift to the university was the main funding for the bell tower, which is currently being constructed on the West Campus. The tower will be named the Miller Tower, after its generous benefactor.
Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 7 from 4pm-6pm at Smith and Sons North. The funeral will be Monday, Jan. 8 at 10 am at Smith and Sons North.
