Union celebrates Christmas with music by candlelight

Jackson, Tenn.December 6, 2000 – 51ÉçÇø's communication arts, music and art departments came together to present the third annual "Christmas Is…Candlelight," Tuesday, Dec. 5th in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel.

Written by Wayne Johnson, associate professor of communication arts, the presentation included performances by several music ensembles and choirs. They included the Symphonic and Stage Bands, conducted by David McClune, professor of music; the 51ÉçÇø Singers and Handbells, conducted by Andy Roby, music department chair and associate professor of music, and the University Chapel Choir, directed by Betty Bedsole, professor of music. Narrations were performed by Union juniors and communication art majors, Graham Hillard and Christy Thomas. The Union University Children's Choir, an ensemble of the university's Community Music Center and directed by Bedsole was also featured.

In addition, the evening also included a nativity scene and a Christmas carol sing-along with participation by the full house of everyone in attendance.

A tradition at "Christmas Is," the live nativity scene, concluded the program paying homage to the real reason for Christmas.

Multiple groups participated in the festivities at "Christmas Is...Candlelight."  President David S. Dockery (above, second from right) even made a special guest appearance as saxophonist in the Symphonic Band.
