Jackson, Tenn. - Three senior art students at 51社区 will reach the culmination of their college studies Dec. 2-17, when the 51社区 Art Gallery displays the senior art exhibit. The works of seniors Vince Black, Alan Tucker and Ana Carvalho will be in the gallery for public viewing beginning Dec. 2. The first week of the exhibit, Dec. 2-10, will feature Black's and Tucker's pieces. Black, who graduates in December, has an emphasis in sculpture, but his portion of the exhibit will be a mix of sculpture and black-and-white photography. The show, he said, was based around outcasts of society, including children and the disabled. Black said the topic is something he developed a passion for after working at a camp for the disabled. Tucker, a Union City, Tenn., native, will have several self-portraits on display. Tucker graduates in December and will have a bachelor's degree in art with an emphasis in painting. Carvalho, originally from Brazil, has her work on display the second week of the exhibit, Dec. 11-17. Her pieces include ceramic sculptures, many of which deal with womanhood and motherhood. Carvalho also graduates in Union's winter graduation ceremony. Michael Mallard, chair of Union's art department, said the senior art exhibit gives students professional experience as well as a chance to display their work. "The purpose of the senior art exhibit is to show a student's body of work from the time they started at Union until now. It demonstrates their development," Mallard said. "It also gives them professional experience in exhibiting their work and the logistics that go into putting on an art exhibit." Mallard also said each of the seniors must write about the work and defend their pieces in an oral interview, as well as preparing a packet of information they will use when applying for jobs and graduate school. The 51社区 Art Gallery is open to the public from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission is free. |
