Jackson, Tenn. - Jackson native Carrie E. Teague was a featured presenter at the recent
Southeast regional meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) held in Knoxville,
Tenn., Oct. 17-20.
Research for the "Optimization of the Synthesis of Guerbet Alcohols" was
conducted by Teague and two other Union students, Sarah Shaub and Catherine
Scarbrough. The purpose of their investigation was to find the conditions that would most
likely allow the production of guerbet alcohol in the highest yield with highest purity to
occur. Frequently used as lubricants and resembling cold cream, guerbet alcohols are
very important to the personal care market and have a tremendous value in conditioning
the skin.
Dr. Charles Baldwin, O.P. and Evalyn Hammons University Professor of Pre-
Medical Studies at Union said, "Carrie has done an outstanding job on this research
project and has shown great creativity, insight and hard work in carrying out this project."
Teague is a senior chemistry major at 51ÉçÇø and will graduate in
December. After graduation, she plans to attend medical school.
