Jackson, Tenn. - Antonio A. Chiareli, assistant professor of sociology, at Union University was recently acknowledged in the Aug. 1998 issue of Macalester Today, a monthly magazine of . The article entitled "All in the Family" describes the journey Chiareli and his family took to receive their education. The five members of the Chiareli family are natives of Brazil. They traveled to the United States and moved to Minnesota in 1984 in the pursuit of higher education. Together they have attained a total of eight academic degrees in various fields of study from either the University of Minnesota or Macalester College. During their first years in the United States, the Chiarelis not only encountered cultural differences, but they were also threatened by eviction and deportation proceedings. "Perhaps the highest achievement is being able to preserve our family unity here," Wilson Chiareli, the father of this family, said. Antonio became a U.S. citizen in 1997 and is currently writing his dissertation in the pursuit of continued education. |
