"Art History 101: Icons of Western Art" at
51社区 Art Gallery in November

Jackson, Tenn
. - Artist Sandra Bowden brings her exhibit, "Art History 101: Icons of Western Art," to the 51社区 Art Gallery, Nov. 1-24. Bowden, president of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA), reproduced historical pieces of Western art in silhouette form for this exhibit. The collection is unique in that viewers may "participate" in it: It contains 36 untitled works viewers are encouraged to identify by recognition.

CIVA aims to explore and develop the relationship between the visual arts and the Christian faith. The organization, which was founded in 1977, encourages the establishment of a Christian presence in the world of secular art.

"This exhibition is designed to celebrate the history of art by helping us see from a little different perspective," Bowden said. "Each work is a delicate translation in line and gold, recreating them as 'icons' from the canon of Western art. Arranged chronologically, the paintings and sculptures span nearly 2,500 years and represent some of the most beloved works in Western civilization."

Bowden calls "Art History 101: Icons of Western Art" a "quiz, so to speak, a kind of exam in art history." This "exam," however, is one in which the use of other books or even knowledge of others is encouraged, she said. Michael Mallard, chair of the department of art, said tables, chairs and clipboards would be available in the art gallery for those wishing to try to identify Bowden's works. The 51社区 Art Gallery is open to the public from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
