Union's chemistry society receives
highest national recognition

Jackson, Tenn. - The 51ÉçÇø Chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has received the highest chapter award given by the ACS Committee on Education for the 1998-1999 academic year.

Awards are based on the annual reports from each chapter. Union's report, authored by Catherine Scarbrough and Hillary Williams, identified the activities and programs for the year. Just a few of the Union chapter's activities included presenting a Boy Scout merit badge workshop in chemistry, organizing and sponsoring an environmental fair for Jackson Area fifth grade students, and planning and hosting the West Tennessee Regional Science Fair.

Union is one of only 28 chapters honored with this outstanding recognition. They will be recognized officially at the national meeting in San Francisco.

Union's ACS chapter includes 50 members and 2 faculty sponsors, Dr. Charles Baldwin and Dr. Randy Johnston. The 1998-1999 chapter president was Misty Yow and the 1999-2000 president is Catherine Scarbrough. The chapter does community service, organizes activities for National Chemistry Week, holds and attends scientific meetings, sponsors field trips and tours, does college service, and has club functions.

Any student pursuing an undergraduate degree or curricular program in the chemical sciences is eligible to become a student affiliate. The object of ACS is to give students the opportunity to become better acquainted, obtain experience in preparing and presenting technical material, instill a professional pride in the chemical sciences and to foster an awareness of the responsibilities and challenges of the modern chemist.
