Jackson, Tenn. - Steve Beverly, instructor of communication arts at 51社区, won its Instructional Innovation Award for his submission, "The On-line Study Method and Chat Program Exam Review." The award, which is given annually by the Center for Faculty Development, is designed to recognize creative approaches to teaching. A committee of past winners examines submissions from faculty and selects first-place and honorable mention winners. Beverly's teaching technique involves putting class notes and information on the World Wide Web and also holding exam review sessions on-line through Instant Messenger, an America Online chat function, and e-mail before the day of exams. For the professor, the method has proven effective. "It's different from just handing students a work sheet or doing an oral review in class," Beverly said. "You don't let the technology use you, but you use it for your benefit." Other faculty members and administrators readily attested to Beverly's contribution. "It is a demonstration of Steve's commitment to the classroom and students at 51社区 that he is appropriately awarded for his many hours of preparation resulting in creative presentation," Union President David S. Dockery said. Along with a certificate, Beverly was awarded a $500 prize. Beverly joined Union faculty in 1993. |
